I have written this bio many times over. People want to know backgrounds and experiences. I tend to write from the heart, a place of truth. Nothing I wrote ever seemed to be right or say what I wanted to say. Until one day I decided that I had to do this my way. It’s an unusual bio, not traditional in the least. It’s not filled with stats and awards. But it is the honest truth of where I started and where I am going.
I am an avid reader, social media junkie, football loving, junk food eating kind of girl. I
love fashion (shoes and jewelry to be specific), music and the arts. If it’s shiny, I’m
I’ve always been the creative, ambitious and meticulous type. I have been an actress, a
singer, a dancer, and a flautist in my younger years. And while I thought those were the
creative directions my life was to go in, life had other plans for me.
I have been a mom for 17 years, a Stay-At-Home mom for 16. I have 3 beautiful kids
and one incredibly supportive husband. I have a degree in interior decorating as well as
wedding planning. And while I love the details in planning, my love lies with
Photography started at a young age for me when my Mother put a camera in my hands
during my brother’s football games so she could watch the game in peace. Back then, it
was something to keep me entertained for a few hours. Although I started taking
pictures when I was a kid I found a passion and need for photography 10 years ago
shooting football and shortly after being diagnosed with Major Depression. Something
about the speed and intensity of the sport always leaves me longing for more. I have
been on my professional journey since January of 2010.
I believe firmly and truly that when your dream is bigger than you, things will happen.
My intention when starting the business was never to become famous or rich. My
intentions are simple – to be an example to my kids. To back up my words when I tell
them that they can do anything if they work for it. Also, my husband works out-of-state
and I want him to be able to work where we live so my family can be intact.
A lot of photographers will tell you that they specialize in one or two types of
photography and I think that’s great! My issue is that I can’t choose! When I started
this journey, I thought for sure I would mainly be taking pictures of children and sports
since those are the subjects I have been working with for years now. I have since come
to this conclusion – I love children, sports, family and High School Seniors – I will always
find joy in photographing them but I also have this need and drive to help women who
walk the same walk as I do. I’ve been there, done it and I know I can help.
I want to help lift women out of the funk of depression that so many of us live in by
showing them that they are not a shadow of who they once were. I want them to know
that even though they may feel broken, there is strength and beauty inside of them
that others can see. I want for them to see it too. I don’t feel that I am in the business
of making people beautiful, I am in the business of showing people how beautiful they
truly are. I want to give women a daily reminder, a kick start…some sense of happiness
even if it’s just in the form of a picture or of feeling real and important for the day.
I believe in giving back, hard work and that if you put your mind to it and sweat
enough you can do anything. I know this to be true. I’m doing just that.
My name is Tonia Johnston. I am a wife, stay at home mom, blogger and a
photographer in Chandler, Arizona.
